Skopje is situated in the Skopje valley, on the banks of the Vardar, the biggest Masedonian river, and his an average height of 240 m to 350 m above the sea level.The valley ocupies a surface area of 1,840 km².

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia, having about 506,926 (census 2002) inhabitants. It is located in the south of Europe, in the Balkan Peninsula.

 

It is one of the important traffic focal point, an intersection of the roads of South Europe.

Skopje is the capital of Macedonian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, many nations live in Skopje for centuries, and the majority of the population make Macedonians (86%) of Orthodox persuasion. The official language is Macedonian, while foreigners are recommended to use English in communication.
